How do you think the convergence process of technologies and businesses will affect our lives in the next 10 years?

I think that in the next 10 years the convergence process of technologies and businesses will affect our lives in every single aspect. Although 10 years is a really long period of time in terms of technology (the most powerful driving force of global transformation), one thing that I am sure about is that thanks to the digital revolution and the advances in telecommunications, our lives will be less “complicated” and we will have greater connectivity and access to information than ever.

It has been said that “in the next ten years the kind of changes that may occur will be far deeper and comprehensive than those that have occurred in the past fifty” I think that the rise of telecommunications will allow everybody in the world to be able to access the web in order to get real time information, also it will help the businesses get closer to their customers and it will make life much easier for people. Hopefully it will close the gap between the leading countries and third world countries, because it will enable them to share their knowledge and experiences, connecting people in rural areas with people in cities like New York or Tokyo. But in order to accomplish that, every country will have to make low-priced broadband available to their citizens or in cases like South America a robust mobile infrastructure must be developed.

In the next 10 years, we will see the convergence of a variety of technologies, video, data, voice and maybe smell, helping businesses connecting to other business and people, not only to sell their products but also to co-create them, generating new efficiencies and amazing possibilities. Some industries will disappear, some will transform, and some will be born. An integration of IT, telecom, and media, a radical change in the advertising industry, and an important leverage on technology in industries and sectors like medical services, politics, and education are also some of the events to be seen in the future.

In near future the so called Net Generation will transform every institution of society, people will no longer have to follow the leaders and do what they are told, they will organize themselves, publish themselves, inform themselves and share with their peers. The convergence process of technologies and business will transform our actual economy system to a one based in collaboration, with a larger usage on digital tools, where business will leverage the power of the web to tap markets in a bigger way and rise their productivity, governments will leverage on it to improve social inclusion, and individuals will get access to new ideas from different parts of the world, so in 10 years from now we will all look back on 2009 with wonder at how we were able to get along with the communication technology that is currently available to us, It may seem hard to imagine such a time but looking back only 10 years it’s hard to believe how far and how rapidly things have changed.

Esta semana empecé una nueva clase que se llama Digital Media Management en el IE con el profesor Guillermo De Haro en donde hablamos sobre los modelos que utilizaríamos durante la clase para realizar nuestros análisis. Durante la discusión me llamo la atención la idea de que 2 + 2 es igual a 4 dependiendo del contexto donde lo mires l y con ello abrió la discusión para hablar sobre dos ecuaciones básicas que usaremos en durante el curso. La primera Data + CONTEXTO = Información e Información + EXPERIENCIA = conocimiento. Dependiendo del contexto y la experiencia que tengamos generaremos conocimiento. Para entender mejor esto, los invito a ver el siguiente video que encontré en TED que explica más o menos lo que discutimos en la clase.

A comienzos de este año con algunos de mis compañeros de clase participamos en un concurso que lanzo Nokia, este fue el video introductorio que utilizamos para la presentación. (el vídeo esta en ingles)

Google y yo

En clase nos han preguntado cual es nuestra posición frente a Google y la verdad tengo sentimientos encontrados, por un lado si no fuera por su motor de búsqueda, encontrar la información que necesito para los mil y mil casos que tengo que entregar en el IE seria imposible, por otro lado felicito a Google por su plataforma de AdWords que hace que tanto una gran compañia con bolsillos grandes para publicidad tenga que disputar una posición en la pantalla de resultados con una compañía mas pequeña y recursos limitados, esto hace que el campo de juego sea un poco mas nivelado y no da ventajas al jugador con mas recursos como es el caso de otros medios como impresos, televisión o radio. Por otro lado, algo que me preocupa de Google es su comportamiento cada vez mas parecido a Microsoft, es de recordar cuando Google lanzo Apps, Microsoft respondio con Office Online y después con Office Web Apps. Ahora bien, en los últimos años han aparecido nuevos competidores como Facebook y Twitter a los cuales Google a respondido con Google Wave y Google Buzz. Esto es un ejemplo de como Google paso de ser una compañía innovadora a esperar y reaccionar como en su caso lo hizo Microsoft cuando Google comenzó años atrás.

Por ultimo no puedo dejar este post sin hablar sobre privacidad, y detesto saber que Google revisa el contenido de mis correos para ofrecerme anuncios publicitarios relevantes, me asusta la idea de tener Latitude instalado en mi BB, y después de ver una presentación sobre Google Voice me parece subreal que Google ahora quiera “leer” mis mensajes de voz. Pero una cosa es clara, Google me ha facilitado la vida y así como con un click de distancia estoy de cualquier información, también con un click de distancia estoy de usar otros servicios que no sean de Google. Este blog tiene un objetivo netamente académico, nace como parte de un seminario del master de telecom and digital business del IE Business School y tendra como objetivo recopilar mis pensamientos sobre temas variados.
